Change of responsibility and existing contract dates

Hello all, I have a question regarding change of responsibility.  I am currently on my parents' 2-year contract family plan, which ends in Jan 14, and I was told by a Tmo rep that it is possible to upgrade my phone by doing a change of responsibility for my line, separate it from the current family plan, and take over the billing for it.  My question is, if I do this and get a new phone, would that delay the end-dates of the other lines of the current family plan?  This is the main thing that would prevent me from doing the change of responsibility, as I do not want me upgrading my recently bricked phone to negatively impact my parents.  The way I see it, since t-mobile technically no longer has contracts anymore, doing an upgrade now wouldn't really cause the existing family plan contract to be extended, but I just wanted to confirm this before I went ahead with any action.  Anyway, thanks for the help!
