Upgrade on one line = Contract extension for all lines?!?

I have 5 lines on my family plan, all opened at different times and originally the contracts all had different end dates. One of them was not under contract as of over a year ago because I did not wish to extend it because of the possibility of that particular person getting a phone with a different carrier. In Dec '12 I got a new phone for myself and my wife via the loyalty dept. Both lines were still under contract, mine was within the 18 month upgrade time frame so I was able to do my discount subsidy. My wife's was not. Customer service told me they would credit the account $200 to make up for the difference on the subsidized amount on my wife's phone. Apparently when they did this credit to my account, it also reset all 5 contracts on my account to the same date. I did not agree to this and did not comprehend that this was a part of the deal.  If I had known this I would not have gone ahead with the second upgrade. So, now that line that I did not want under contract and never renewed is extended until Dec '14. The person who had that line now has a phone with a different carrier and I have a phone and line that is no longer being used nor is it needed. There is no way to verify contract dates anymore because TMo seems to think customers don't need that information and removed the feature from website. So all along I was under the assumption that that line was basically month to month and I could cancel when I needed to cancel. I called 611 and was told that I would have to pay the $200 ETF to cancel that line. I also had a short time frame on the contract on another line that I was going to cancel when time was up, but that would now be another $200. Does this seem shady to anyone else? How can I fix this?
