A big part of why I signed up for Family Allowances is to limit my children's phone activity (Talk and Text), for punishment, reward and safety. With the T-Mobile adoption of the iPhone comes iMessage capabilities. Unfortunately, with iMessage, all texting limits and schedules are nearly worthless.
Without simple parental controls for data along with talk and text, Family Allowances are really only useful for managing talk and text fees, not the actual allowing (or not allowing) communication. "Allowances" is about allowing certain amounts for certain periods. Simply shutting off data (via T-Mobile or the iPhone settings) is an option, but it negates the reason I have Family Allowances, and disables many other features I need (Find my Friends, some GPS, etc.)
Disabling iMessage on iPhone via Restrictions - This works somewhat. Due to bad T-Mobile coverage areas around us, and glitchy cellular MMS settings, this also frequently inhibits important family communications with phone numbers my child is allowed to, and needs to contact.
I think the point is that what I want is Family Allowances, as opposed to disabling features. I think adding data to the Family Allowances (including scheduling) features would help. Yes, I know I've got a WIFI battle to fight then, but one thing at a time! :-)
I would appreciate anyone's input on this, T-Mobile or otherwise.
